This course is an introduction to the meaning of the terminology ‘English for Specific Purposes’. I learnt that the application of English teaching has a much wider scope than just teaching learners who need to learn the language for general purposes. Some learners of English have specific goal-oriented tasks to perform and therefore require to learn specific grammar and usage.
I studied the different Business English settings that I can find myself in, and what to expect. In my opinion, teaching English in-house or at a company is more preferable. This is because the learners, being from the same organization, have similar goals and therefore will likely have similar dedication and energy levels. Also the teacher can track their progress from individual feedback, feedback from HR or from departmental heads. The learners can also practice their language skills among each other during work hours and help themselves improve.
