Prior to beginning this course, I assumed that the English language simply has three tenses- past, present and future. How wrong I was!! There are actually 12 tenses and this unit focused on the four which relate to present tense- present simple, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous. Present simple is probably the most common tense used in the English language and it is simply subject + the base verb. This is used to describe habits or routines or to state general facts. The present continuous is used to describe action that is in progress at the time of speaking and its structure is subject + auxiliary verb "be" + verb with ing at the end. The present perfect has multiple usages including describing things that happened at an unspecified time and talking about completed actions that were carried out during an unfinished time period. The basic structure of this is subject + have + past participle form of the verb. The final present tense is present perfect continuing which takes the basic structure of subject + auxiliary verb "have" + been + verb with ing at the end. This tense is used when indicating an incomplete or ongoing activity when you want to say how long it has been continuing for and describing a recently finished uninterrupted activity with present result.
