Unit two covered the topics of teaching and learning in relation to teaching business English. I reviewed the main teacher roles studied within the base TEFL course (Instructor, Mentor, etc), and then learned about the various responsibilities I would typically have when teaching. These included the external responsibilities (as related to post, hierarchy, etc), the internal responsibilities (such as performance or personal goals), and the unwritten responsibilities (being on time, preparing lessons, explaining meanings, etc). Next the unit covered the different types of clients I may teach, such as adults, groups or individuals who pay either me or my employer. It provided me information on the advantages of teaching these groups, as well as some of the common disadvantages and their solutions. For example, I learned how higher maturity levels could mean less behavioral problems and more motivation, but it could also mean there is more daily life/work pressure that can hinder learning and participation. Next I learned about how to apply the four main skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) to the business English world when teaching. By covering topics like how to write and give a presentation, how to structure and comprehend emails, letters or memos, and more, I feel more confident covering these topics with learners. Finally, the unit finished by reviewing the main teaching methods covered in the base TEFL course. I found this portion helpful because it reminded me of some key points of other teaching methods outside the ESA method, as well as encouraged me to do further research about Pavlov and Skinner’s theory of behaviorism. This helped provide me with a better understanding to how the theories of learning changed as the psychological aspect of learning was considered during their creations.
