Modal verbs are used before other verbs to convey extra meaning to the sentence. The nine true modal verbs are can, could, should, would, may, might, must, will and shall. There are many usages of modal verbs and some of the main ones are to indicate ability, give advice, express a deduction, make a request, show an obligation and to ask for permission. Modal verbs can have multiple usages, for example the word would is used as a polite request, to demonstrate a preference and to talk about a repeated past action. The passive voice is when the structure of a sentence is changed to give emphasis to a different part of the sentence. Phrasal verbs are a type of verb that use multiple words operating as one, for example "he didn't turn up."
