Like the present tense, the past tense has four different types- past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. For regular verbs, past simple usually involves adding ed at the end, for example, I work becomes I worked. The past continuous is very similar to the present continuous with the structure being subject + auxiliary verb were/was + verb + ing, for example, I was cooking. A common use of the past continuous is for describing past actions that were interrupted. The past perfect takes the structure subject + auxiliary verb had + past participle. This form is most commonly used to talk about actions that happened in the past before other past actions, for example when I arrived, the concert had started. The words after/when will often appear in these sentences. Finally, the past perfect continuous takes the form subject + had + been + verb + ing. This tense is not commonly used.
