Depending on what type of course you have, you may need different skills and methods to teach. For example kids have a short span of attention, so your activities need to vary and be funny, that way they’ll pay attention and won’t get bored. Also, you may have some behavior problems with kids. There will be some problems that you will be able to control as attention seeking (solution: give attention to the student by making him/her erase the board and help you with other things in the classroom) and others you won’t be able to control (e.g. problems that come from home). Regarding adults, they are usually taking the course because they want, so they’ll be more enthusiastic and willing to learn than kids. If you have a multilingual class, the students won’t share a language and they’ll be forced to use English to communicate. In the case of monolingual classes, it’s good that you walk around the classroom monitoring the students with a pen in your hand, this way it’ll be less probable that they switch to their mother tongue. As for business courses, a general knowledge about this will be enough to teach English to a group of people. At the beginning of the course make a “needs analysis” to know what your students want to learn and try to mix that with what you consider they need to learn. You could also have a one-on-one course. Some people prefer this because they think it’s more focused on their own needs than a group class. Remember that in this kind of course you’ll be your students’ partner. If you have a beginners group, always remember not to over-correct you students and always praise them. Also, give clear and easy instructions and be very visual (useful for teaching new vocabulary).
