Unit 19 highlights the importance of teaching different types of groups. Five classifications have been pointed out: beginners, individuals, young learners, Business English and monolingual versus multilingual learners. Each group has a different need and dynamic, therefore a good preparation and a certain way of teaching is required: Beginners: teachers should keep the lesson simple; get them talking and do lots of interactive game, so that the students stay motivated. High level of patience is required from the teacher. Individuals (one- to-one): a needs analysis has to be done prior to the course. It is important to find out what the student already knows and in which areas he/she needs support. In one-to-one class the dynamic is missing, therefore it is recommended to find out student’s interests and base the lessons on them. However, all four basic skills should be covered. Young learners: the focus here is to prepare lots of activities such as interactive games. Keep the language as simple as possible when interacting with them. Young learners will be motivated by giving them constant approvals. Business English: the size of the group can vary. It can be an individual, single or mixed department. Therefore, a needs analysis is required for a course plan. The needs analysis questionnaire would help the teacher find out in which particular circumstances the English language is needed such as giving presentation, selling a product to a customer or sending emails. Teaching Business English also requires a high amount of professionalism. There are certain codes of conduct to be followed. Monolingual versus multilingual learners: in a monolingual class they have common difficulties, whereas in a multilingual group the difficulties can vary, because they are coming from different countries. When teaching those classes the teacher has to be aware of the cultural background by not trying to offend them in any way.
