In order to successfully learn a English as a second language, there are four fundamental elements required by students at all levels of competency; they need to be exposed to the language, understand the meaning of the language, know how the langauge is constructed and have the chance to practice and therefore know how to use the language. In practice this means many lessons will be focussed on the acquisition of vocabulary, the grammatical construction of language structures and the learning how to appropriately master the various functions of language. The type of ESA lesson structure will depend, in part, on which of these skills (vocabulary, grammar or language function) is the main focus of the lesson.
