The choice of teaching materials will often be dictated or at least heavily influenced by the school; many schools will have a syllabus and/or teaching course book that teachers will be expected to follow/use. Whether a course book is provided or not teachers should make an effort to use authentic materials where appropriate and to create their own teaching materials that can be tailored to the students far more effectively than a general course book. Created materials give a teacher the opportunity to ensure students are fully engaged in the lessons by choosing topics that are of interest to the students, and by pitching the language at the appropriate level.
