This unit covers the essential basic grammar that is commonly taught in EFL: modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, phrasal verbs and relative clauses. Modal auxiliary verbs are verbs that are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb, such as can, should and must. It can be used for a number of different ideas and normally apply for both present and future meanings. A chart is presented in the text to show all the expressions, uses and use of tenses for each modal verbs under different formalities. Different ideas can be used for teaching, such as role play between patient and doctor, establishing rules and regulations for a hotel, guessing the traffic sign. In addition, passive voice and relative clause are also introduced in this unit. Differences of pronouns in defining relative clause and in non-defining relative clauses are explained together with examples. Furthermore, phrasal verbs which includes intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable are very difficult for students to understand and better to learn together with vocabulary items. After I studied this unit, I gained more confidence to teach phrasal verbs and modal auxiliary verbs. A number of techniques and methods can be employed here to make the learning process easier, such as choosing a particular topic and encourage students to use them naturally during uncontrolled conversation.
