This unit focused on receptive skills: reading and listening. The lesson covered basic information, such as the specialist skills needed for reading and listening effectively (e.g. skimming, predicting, etc.) and how to choose topics to read and listen to. It then required creativity, in thinking about how to create 2 lesson plans for reading and listening, both centered around making comparisons. One creative idea I thought for the engage section of the second lesson would be to start the class by handing out pieces of paper with a simple noun on it: a food, a country, a color, etc. Students then have to find their partner with the same topic (i.e. a person with a food on their paper has to find someone else with a food on their paper). I then write categories on the board and students need to put their words in the correct categories. I could then elicit comparative words out of them to compare each noun, such as "than", "from", "as", "not as", etc. E.g. cake is tastier than apples. This would then lead to study sections on how to form these sentences and reading exercises to note comparative words, etc.
