Placement testing is essential at the beginning in order to properly place the student in appropriate class. As a teacher, I think that regular progress tests could be useful to keep track of the students' progress, which would perhaps culminate in a final test at the tend of the course. In some countries, students will be studying with an eye to take an external test. In this case, I think it would be useful to provide practice tests so that they can get used to the format and answering questions whilst constrained under a time limit. Tests can be used to both gauge progress in general; but also to build confidence, because students will hopefully be able to see the progress they've made throughout the course.
