Testing is useful for a variety of reasons. Placement tests are an efficient way to put the right students in the correct class. Diagnostic tests can allow the teacher to know strengths and weaknesses at the beginning of the class. Progress tests can ensure that students are retaining information, and external tests are useful for job searches. Some disadvantages are that they sometimes measure memory of language rather that ability in a language, and sometimes other methods are more effective. I feel that tests should be used sparingly, but in some situations such as practice tests prior to an external exams, students might be welcoming.
