There are four basic skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Reading and listening are called “receptive skills”. The students passively receive and process the information through these skills. Anyway, Everybody has two reasons to use these skills: for a purpose (to achieve some particular aim, for example reading instructions on the computer); for entertainment (for example, to listen to music or to read a novel). We should teach receptive skills before productive skills, because receptive skills are passive activities (compare with productive skills). A teacher should be aware about some areas (deduction, detailed reading, scanning, skimming, prediction) of these skills and know how to avoid the problems (reading word for word, sentence length, structure, speed of speech, accent). The teaching and learning of listening and reading (receptive skills) presents quite a number of potential problems which need to be addressed. The teacher can avoid above potential problems: 1. To pre-teach the complex vocabulary/grammar 2. To be careful with the selection of texts, topics 3. To create interest before the beginning of reading or listening (jigsaw, jumbled texts etc.)
