The unit describes the books and materials that can be used in teaching English, these materials are subdivided into two groups, first it is the Authentic materials which would be all the written or audio/visual materials that are available and can be used for the purpose of teaching and secondly are Created materials, these are the materials prepared and used by the teacher specific to his/her needs. Authentic and created materials have their advantages and disadvantages, and they may not be used one at the sole exclusion of the other. Selection of authentic materials, such as course material can be a very tricky and or even complicated matter and a number of factors have to be consider before deciding on the course material one would like to make use of, factors such as pricing, availability, relevance to one's specific group of students etc.
