This unit reviewed the systems and structures of past tenses. I Learnt how tenses are formed grammatically, common errors, teaching activities, irregular verbs to study, and the difference of structure and usages between these tenses. The keys to teaching past simple effectively is by making it clear from the very beginning that the past simple is used when something begins and ends in the past. I would begin a lesson by giving examples in the present simple and lead into the past simple. it is important to make use to the board and OHP and give lots of examples and practice to the students. It would be useful to provide students with a list of irregular verbs for studying and future references and these must be learnt and memorized. Quick drills and games will help students learn irregular forms. It is a good idea to model the forms and then encourage an immediate answer similar to your model example. After the students are familiar with the form, i would make use of comprehensive activities to expand their understanding.
