Unit 15 is about the proper way of evaluating and testing students of the English language. There are 3 ways that a teacher can assess their students by means of tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests.I have learnt about the five types of test a teacher could use to help them assess their students in a more effective way.First, is the Placement test or the level test, with the name itself it helps teachers to place their student to their particular level of class. In this test, all four skills of English are often tested, they check the progress of a students by asking easy question and gradually harder questions.Next, is the Diagnostic test,it gives information about the students current strengths and weaknesses,it can tell a teacher about the students aptitude and allows teachers to focus planning on gaps in students knowledge.Thirdly,is the progress test, also four skills are tested and it often required by the school or language center,it has different frame and it indicates areas the students are having problems with and suggest we should go over then again. There is also the Practice test which is used for revision purposes, for internal and external exams so it always best to make the test's style and content as near as possible as the real exam.In this unit, the three categories of external proficiency test were given,it is composed of the General English, where the Cambridge offers the five levels of exams. The KET(Key English test or the entry level)and the PET (Preliminary English Test) these are both used for the starter/Elementary level learners, there is also the FCE(First Certificate in English) used for upper intermediate learners,CAE ( Certificate in Advance English) and the CPE( Certificate of proficiency in English)there are both use for the higher level learners. Also, there is what they called the CELS (Certificate in English Language Skills. When it comes to the Business Exams two there are two known categories worldwide. The TOEIC(Test of English for International communication, this is mainly popular in Japan and Korean and as used by many companies throughout the world as well as some universities and it covers all four skills, the other one is the Cambridge BEC(Cambridge Business English Certificate) which consist of the Preliminary, vantage and higher exams and also the BULATS( Business English Language Testing System) used within companies and it is a multilingual assessment system. In Academic English, there is the TOEFL( Test of English as a Foreign Language which is used by universities as an entry requirement to Non-native speaker of English and is recognized in over 90 countries. This can be taken by paper test or a computer test. Also there is the IELTS(International English Language Testing system) which cover the four skills, also it is used as an entry requirement to universities but unlike TOEFL,IELTS can make a choice for reading and writing skills, this test is done in an academic exam or a general option.
