There are three ways to assess a student's language level: tutorial, evaluation by the students and tests that can be a formal written test or more like an informal group activity. These tests may be every weekly, monthly or by a certain amount of the book has been covered. Placements tests are designed to analyze the English level of new students so each student can be placed in classes at the right level. Normally this type of test is based on multiple choices questions, followed by an interview to evaluate the level of fluency. Progress tests test all four skills, writing, speaking, listening and reading. They are usually required by the school or language center. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests. It tests the strengths and weakness of the students. They are given at the start and it helps the teacher to evaluate what the students already know and what gaps they have in knowledge. The teacher can plan a class that will supply they need based on the results. Placements tests are progressive, it starts from basic questions and eventually becomes harder to test how far the student can go. Practice tests are used for internal and external tests. It is used for revision purposes. The common proficiency tests are classified in three categories, General English, Business English and Academic English. The 5 Cambridge General English exams are KEY (Key English Test) and PET (Preliminary English Test) for elementary level, FCE (First Certificate in English) and CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) for Upper Intermediate level and CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) for higher level. The Business English exams designed for those who are learning English for a career purpose in business. The three exams are BEC (Business English Certificate), BULATS (Business Language Testing Service) and TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) this exam evaluates all four skills and can also be accepted by some universities.
