This unit has provided me with examples of a good and bad lesson. Both lessons have highlighted the importance of loving what you do, especially when working with younger learners, who tend to be easily discouraged. The book 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' by Dale Carnegie, which I recently finished, has taught me to start off with a smile, always let the other person save face and criticism only harbours resentment, lessons which the Simon in the first video didn't apply. Many of the things Carnegie says in his book are applied in this course, especially starting with a smile. I never realized how much the teacher's attitude affects the class and the learning environment. This unit has also allowed me to practically apply all the knowledge gained the previous lessons by analyzing these videos. I was able to spot the different methods used and applied in the lessons and I was very critical in Simon's faults in the first lesson. I was also able to pick up on different methods of elicitation. I was a nice change of pace watching another teacher successfully elicit answers from their class. As a teacher in Japan, I find it difficult at times to elicit answers from students. But it seems to be an accomplishable task in different circumstances (different culture/ learner level/ motivations). This unit has helped me see how far I've come.
