As an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in Japan, I have never produced test material for my students. ALTs are usually just tasked with editing and marking tests that Japanese Teacher of English (JTEs) produce; that being said, I’ve only been able to independently gauge students based on their oral communication skills via interview tests, which is similar to placement and diagnostic tests. During my interview tests, students would give a one minute to say a speech that they produced, followed by a couple questions from me, based on the speech and the current knowledge of the students. Although I have never produced test materials for English learners, after studying this unit and I have very limited freedom on testing, I feel more confident in producing materials in the future for testing English learners.
