Conditionals Conditionals are sentences containing “if” which refer to past, present and future possibilities. There are two clauses, the “ if” clause and the main clause, and either can come in the first part of a conditional sentence. There are five main conditionals: 1. Zero Conditional Form – if/when + present tense, present tense e.g. If you do your homework, you get candies. 2. First Conditional Form – if + present simple, will e.g. If you call me earlier I will join you. 3. Second conditional Form – if + past simple, would + base form e.g. If you called me earlier I would join you. 4. Third Conditional Form – if + past perfect, would + have + past participle e.g. If you had called me earlier I would have joined you. 5. Mixed Conditional Form – if + past perfect, would + base form e.g. If you had called me earlier I would join you.
