So far, this unit on pronunciation and phonetics has been the most fascinating for me. While I am quite comfortable with stress, rhythm, intonation and teaching them to English learners, teaching pronunciation of English's many constant and vowel sounds is challenging. I think the section on articulation with the diagram and explanations will be very useful for me going forward. Students can see the surface of my mouth movements, but they can't see inside of the mouth and throat like in the diagram. I would like to incorporate these kinds of diagrams into my pronunciation activities. Sound linking is a key way to help students speak more smoothly and naturally. I have introduced some of these concepts into my lessons and found students enjoyed saying, "What dijoo do last weekend?" and "Whatsis name?" It also helps them listen to authentic interviews or speeches, as English speakers usually do not clearly separate every word when speaking. Some of my students use the phonetic alphabet to try to learn pronunciation of new words, but I admit I had never taken much time with it. Studying it here and reading the sentences written phonetically was more enjoyable than I had realized. I would like to get more familiar with phonemic symbols and try to use them to help students read words they find when using their dictionaries.
