In this unit I looked at modal auxiliary verbs, which is a type of verb that is used to indicate modality - that is: likelihood, ability, permission, request, capacity, suggestions, order and obligation and advice. They always take v1 form with them. Examples include the English verbs can/could, may/might, must, will/would and shall/should. Modal verbs are followed by a verb in its base form - I might go. This applies for both present and future meanings. To use modals to express ideas in the past the situation is somewhat more complicated; modals with more than one meaning may express past ideas in different ways according to meaning. However, I am still trying to understand this unit further and will do further exercises to fully comprehend this specific unit.
Furthermore, active and passive voice was also studied in this unit. Active voice describes a sentence where the subject performs that action stated by the verb. For example, Harry ate six shrimp at dinner. In passive voice sentences, the subject is acted upon by the verb. For example At dinner, six shrimp were eaten by Harry.
Following on, relative clauses were also studied in this unit, a clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. There are three categories of clauses, which include:
1. Independent clauses: which is a complete sentence. It contains the main subject and verb of a sentence.
2. Dependent clause: is not a complete sentence. It must be connected to an independent clause.
3. Relative clause: is a dependent clause that modified a noun. It describes, identifies, or gives further information about a noun. It can also be referred to as an adjective clause.
