I really enjoyed this Unit. It sparked my interest enough that I found myself looking for additional resources on the topic of “Classroom Interaction”. I ended up exploring and bookmarking several reference articles, videos, and resource books for my future needs. It also made me think deeply about what lays a foundation for a good experience in the classroom. All in all, it got me a bit excited about teaching English to learners as an L2. I gave some thought toward how “setting up the classroom for success” depends on my immediate introduction as a teacher. For example, does meeting the pupils at the door and greeting them with a calm demeanor and a smile give me an advantage? If, upon entering class, I communicate that we are quieting down to get into learning mode, would it be possible to make the first inroad into paying attention? This could establish initial rapport and pacing, if done effectively. I was also interested in the further elaboration on the cooperative process that takes place when teaching. The students ay bring culture, or understanding level, or even home experiences that affect how they might behave in a classroom…and that may differ from day to day! At the same time, my conduct in the classroom as well as how I perform other interactions is also very important in shaping the teacher-learner relationship. Arriving punctually, being prepared, returning work and tests in a timely fashion, all go into the fabric of managing a class and the students’ trust and expectations. It adds support to the idea that creating a non-judgmental and fair space to allow all types of students a chance to do their best is necessary.
