Unit 12 followed the receptive skills unit with teaching the productive skills of speaking and writing, including a section about games for the classroom. I learned that writing skills are often neglected because it is quiet in the classroom instead of interactive speaking among the students which is what TEFL teachers aim for. Writing requires more accuracy because once it is written, it is there in stone, so to speak. Speaking allows immediate restatements and clarifications, and requires a greater fluency of bringing the words out in a coherent manner. Communication is a dynamic process, but there are four generalizations we can make: the individuals involved have some reason to speak together, they want to communicate, they want to hear what the other has to say, or they are interested in what is being said. As teachers, then, we must bring about the need and desire in students to communicate. Speaking activities involve controlled activities like drilling and prompting, guided activities which are more creative and student oriented as in role-ply, and creative communication which is fluency based as in discussions and communication games. Writing skills are more accuracy based and involve correct use of grammar, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting (penmanship), layout(style) and punctuation. I loved learning that some languages do not use punctuation. (Unit 12, pg.8, Layout and Punctuation
