This unit reviews the past tenses, used to describe actions that are completed in the past without reference to a specific point in time, past simple, or actions that are completed in the past with respect to a specific time, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. The past perfect is an even that was completed before a point of reference in the past. The past continuous is an action that was in progress at a specific reference point in the past and the past perfect continuous is an action performed for a specific length prior to the past point of reference that could or could not have been finished by the time of the reference point, but with an emphasis on the time outside of the reference point used to complete the action. One of the best ways to practice these seems to be storytelling, since a major element of English narrative discourse is the baseline use of past tense.
