Although writing skills do have a lot of importance, particularly for adult students requiring it for business reasons, my view is that there is a level of compeetency in the language before any written work would be beneficial to a student. Lack of understanding of the basics of english would hamper a students ability to comprehend the nuances of writing and would probably be detrimental to the learning curve.
There are so many rules and variations in spelling etc. that I feel starting written exercises to early would discourage learning.
