This section described the usefulness of tests and evaluations. Tests can help place students in the right level of coursework, periodically measure progress, prepare for a final examination and prepare for an external examination. A good teacher will be constantly evaluating students through the use of feedback in class, but these other testing methods can be helpful. Some teachers say that it is only measuring memory, not ability. That would be a hard distinction to make as it requires storing the correct information in the memory to be able to recall it correctly to be able to use it. Therefore, understanding is not guaranteed with a passed test, and neither is retention.
