In this unit, I learned about the receptive skills of reading and listening. According to this lesson, our main reasons for reading and listening are for a purpose because it will help us achieve some goal, and for entertainment because we find it enjoyable. While people are reading and listening, they use several different skills depending on the text or dialogue. These include predictive skills which help one guess what might be in an article after reading its headline, scanning skills to look for specific information, skimming skills to get the general idea of a text or dialogue, and reading and listening skills to learn all the details about a particular topic. Potential problems because of language difficulty for the students can be avoided when the teacher employs various techniques, such as pre-teaching unfamiliar vocabulary, selecting texts and topics which are of interest to the students, or creating interest in an unfamiliar topic by showing pictures or otherwise engaging the students before reading or listening to the text. This unit also presents two examples of effective receptive skills lessons. One of these is a patchwork lesson about Elvis Presley. The other is an article comparing what people wear, along with reading comprehension questions and a gap-fill activity. In the study phase of this lesson the teacher teaches about making comparisons in English, followed by two exercises practicing these comparisons. At the end of the lesson, in the activate phase, the teacher has the students write sentences comparing their clothes with the clothes that people wear in other parts of the world.
