There are a number of different tests throughout the course that should be given at different stages. A placement test is used to ensure students are placed into the correct class according to their skills. Diagnostic tests are usually given at the start of a course to see what the students already know and help teachers make lesson plans. Progress tests should be used periodically to gauge what has been remembered and what has been forgotten. Practice tests are used prior to taking external exams.
