In this lesson, I learned about useful equipment in the classroom and other teaching aids. The unit discusses several different things which help a teacher during a lesson, beginning with boards, including traditional and interactive whiteboards. It gives a list of different ways to effectively use a board, including writing legibly and large enough so that the whole class can see it, and using different colors with underlining or circling to emphasize or categorize certain words and phrases. With regard to an interactive whiteboard, it is important to have proper training on the best way to use the board and its software, and to always have a back-up plan should the IWB not function properly. Other teaching aids mentioned in this unit include visual objects in the form of real objects and pictures to help illustrate the meaning of vocabulary words and concepts, and worksheets which are often used during the study phase of a lesson to help students practice the material being taught. This lesson then talks about various audiovisual aids such as cassette and CD players for student listening exercises, and videos or DVDs which can bring authentic scenarios into the classroom to help motivate students to learn by increasing their interest. Video cameras and cassette recorders are also helpful to record students at various intervals so they can better monitor their language progress. The next things discussed in the lesson are various books in the form of dictionaries, course books and resource books, with dictionaries being the most useful to students for translating, pronunciation and word usage. Finally, the unit gives tips on how to use computers and on-line resources in the classroom, including as resource tools for students and teachers, for podcasts and YouTube videos, which are increasingly replacing more traditional resources.
