In this unit I learn't how to use a wide assortment of of teaching aids and materials to help my students with.This is a small list of teaching aids that I can use: Wipe Board, Visual Aids, Computer/ Laptop, Course Books, Audio and Video Equipment, Dictionaries, Resource Books and Worksheets. It would be a good start to start with a clean wipe board and with the aid of using colors and tables set out a simple board plan.Then I learn;t how to use some visual aids such as photo's, pictures and models. Some of the benefits of using visual aids in the classroom are, it can reduce the teacher talk time, it adds variety and keeps the students interested, it can aid memory, stimulates discussion and there are a lot of visual aids the can be made by the teacher. I learn't that to make worksheets and work-cards and to laminate them to make them more durable. When using cassettes or laptops for audio always make sure that you know how to work the equipment properly to avoid embarrassing issues. This type of visual aid can act as a prompt and create motivation. The use of Dictionaries can also be used as a visual aid for things like pronunciation, spealing, typical context, but it's very important not to let the students over use these aids. I also learn't that the three book series can be very useful for helping both teacher and student as it helps set out activities, information about the teaching point and can help with the activate stage of a lesson. But there are downsides to be aware of when using these: Advantages, students expect to use them, great for new teachers and they come graded for the level of students. Disadvantages, the book dictates the lesson, may not be suitable for the whole class, and both students and teacher may not like the book. You can use the course books at 4 angles, adapt, omit, replace and supplement. Materials such as authentic, news magazines, songs, poems, brochures and menus and created or Non authentic such as flashcards, games, role playing and crosswords. The difference between these two is that the created are specific for the classroom, where as the authentic is usually bought but can be used in the classroom. I learn't that its important to keep a balance with using authentic and created materials as they both have there advantages and disavantages.
