Sure these are always rules to be considered. However, from my experience a lot of people engaging into a new language comes down to the energy in the environment there learning, as well as the desire and willpower to push on through failure. A lot of kids don't want to do something they know nothing about. Sometimes it makes them feel inferior to their peers if they cant do something they can. Students must be reminded to fail in my opinion. Failure sometimes is the best thing you can do. You can only learn from failing. "Winners" tend learn slower as they may not be told things that they're doing wrong. It's always possible to breach the gap.
