This unit is about receptive skills, which is reading and listening. Reasons for reading are: to get a specific information(for a purpose) to understand the information in order to apply it or for some particular aim or for pleasure( entertainment), for example, reading books because we enjoy it. What is important to know is that when we read and listen, we do not exactly do it with our eyes and ears. We do it with our mind. It is able to grasp the overall meaning from a pre-existing knowledge of the word. There are some skills that readers and listeners use while listening and reading. They are: predictive skills( predicting the content), scanning (seeking for specific info), skimming (to get the gist of the text), detailed information (understand everything in detail), deduction from context(see beyond the literal meaning of words).
