This unit discussed effective ways to teach new language to students. It is not as easy to determine what kind of vocabulary to teach when as it is for grammatical structures. Most curricula agree more or less on a general progression of grammatical structures to learn and build upon. For vocabulary, the important key is to teach appropriate and useful vocabulary and vocabulary that helps to introduce whatever grammatical structure or language function you are trying to introduce. Language functions are social scripts that languages use to complete a task, such as apologizing, bartering, or giving instructions. They draw from discourse genres to create a form or structure with which to signal the listener that they are trying to accomplish a certain task.
