The reason for a tense is similar to that of the present. A past simple is used for past actions where time is given, similar to a fact. It is used when the time is asked about and used when an event clearly took place at a definite time. The base form is also what is used but to make it about the past you add ed after the word. The Past Continuous is used for interrupted past actions, to express actions that had happened before that time and continued, and for descriptions or a gradual development in the past. This is constructed by using was/were and ing. Past Perfect represents actions that had occurred before other actions in the past. It is built by using had + a past participle. Ex. When I got to my car I realized I HAD LOST my keys. The past perfect continuous uses aspects of both the perfect and continuous. It is used to talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment being spoken about. It is constructed by using had + been + ing verb.
