This unit discussed the different types of ways one can evaluate a student's English level and progress. It also discusses when each type of evaluation is appropriate and how it can be distributed. The first type of test a teacher should administer to a student is either a placement test or diagnostic test. If a student has never been to a language school a placement test will allow you to gauge which level of class to place them in. If they are already a student at a language school and know their level a diagnostic test will allow you to see what it is they know and need work on. Then there is the progress test. Which doesn't have to be the typical paper and pencil kind of game but can be discussions or a game or whatever creative method you can think of. The job of a progress test is to gauge how much of the lessons your student has actually understood and where they currently stand. The progress test is also a great way to review and allow your students to revise their work to see themselves what they need to work on. Then there are practice tests. Which manly exist because either the school requires it or it is practice for an end of the class exam. The practice test should have a similar format to what the exam will be like and should help students prepare for it. Some exams a student can take include the TOEFL, TOEIC, CAE, ESOL, and much more.
