There are 4 basic skills in any language: The receptive skills...reading & listening; and the productive skills...speaking & writing. All are equally important to the ESA teacher, and said teacher should incorporate all into his or her lessons for balance. For students to gain knowledge, they use not only their eyes and ears but also use "pre-existant knowledge" to gain a deeper understanding. it is important for an ESA teacher to allow students to use both during lessons. The topics a teacher uses during comprehension exercises should be interesting to all the students in a class, and not too easy or too difficult.
