It seems to me that most coursebook authors actually expect the user to be selective, to pick and choose parts of the units to develop as building blocks for the teacher's own lesson plans rather than use them in their entirety. In fact, in all fields, if one thinks carefully about how long it would take to use all the materials provided, one can see that actually using the textbook in a complete and faithful fashion would require many more hours than any class actually has.
