Reported speech and conditionals are part of grammar deemed as not important because many thinks that it is not important specially in communicating. Most of the time, when speaking, one does not really follow the rules of conditionals and the rules of the reported speech and only follows the common pattern like first conditional. Many students and even speakers do not also follow the back shifting rules and the change in the words rule when it comes to reported speech. These two however are really important specially when preparing a report. So even if some say it is not important in communicating, it is important in written English.
