This unit, Teaching Special Groups, has providing some interesting information. I have tutored some students that fall under the special groups category. In this unit it stated never to use the native language when teaching English. On occasion I would use the native language in certain circumstances and only as a tool to ensure a smooth running of the lesson. It would be to use single words as a translation tool, as it took 3 to 4 times longer to look up the meaning of the word than simply saying the native word and we could then move on with the lesson. Unfortunately time was a luxury not afforded to us. It also helped build a rapport with students, especially unruly students who I did not have the option of excluding so the rest of the students could learn. It seemed to assist when eliciting English from the unruly student. I would then immediately change to English and get them to provide me with the native word, then return to English. Most of the these type of students would usually then remember the English equivalent and use it when requested. I also did it to prevent the use of foul language in class or have certain students swearing at me in class - because they were not sure how much I did or did not know. Please note this occurred only on occasion, but enough to warrant swift and diplomatic action to prevent future issues. Most students had never come across a person of my gender and nationality to want to speak the native language, let alone actually do so, so this also helped build a rapport with the students.
