The rules, dynamics and functions of the tenses in teaching English grammar create confusion not only to students but also to teachers. Studying and learning the tense system is very different from teaching it to others. It takes a lot of practice to learn the pattern and at the same time memorize the verbs needed in each sentence and structure. As stated in the unit, we get to learn three basic tenses – the present, the past, and the future tense. But we also need to learn the four aspects that encompass each tense, and that makes it a little more difficult to understand sentence structure. If one gets familiar with the present tense – which is the most basic, it is easier to recognize the other parts. The present tense can form a simple tense, a continuous or progressive tense, a perfect tense, and a perfect continuous. I think that the aim of teaching the present tense first is for students to be comfortable in using the English language based on basic circumstances they’ll be introduced with, that is, the present time. This will help them say or write sentences easier especially in the Activate stage activities. As teachers, we also have to be careful in correcting student errors as some English tense rules overlap with how they learned tense rules in their native language.
