How we take in language varies depending on what you are trying to get out of the subject. The different ways you can read or listen to the content is scanning, skimming, or detailed reading. You can also predict or deduce the infomation from context which is a little harder and I think applies mainly to stronger language students. This is because you need to read beyond the literal meaning of the words. To predict an article based on the title can also be tricky because you have to be familiar with intricacies of the language.
