I am currently studying Japanese language and one of the first things they told us was that basically in Japanese there are only 2 tenses - past and present. I was really surprised to read at the beginning of this unit about the linguists'idea this is universally the case. However, in my opinion, all complicated English tenses can be expressed in the japanese language, only that the expressions are formed differently. As a native Bulgarian, I can definitely disagree that there are only 3 tenses in our Slavic language. Yes, the basic ones are past, present and future of course, as it is in English too, but we have the simple and continuous forms in all the three, the forms expressing finished or not finished action again in all the three and so on. I can argue that English is not more complicated than other languages. Each language has its specifics and it's not logical to categorize languages into easy and complicated, nor into rich and poor in vocabulary. Only if one does not dig deep enough in a language, can get the incorrect idea that a language lacks ways of expressing something. Of course, I am not a linguist, but this is my opinion after studying several languages in my life. In general, the unit was a good overview of present tenses in English language and gave me ideas to use in the activate stage of my present and future classes.
