Unit 12 is all about the teaching of productive skills such as speaking and writing. The skill of writing is one of the strongest assets to a student but is typically an underdeveloped tool due to its regulation to homework alone which is insufficient. Depending on the work ethic of the students, writing can be a challenge to most because the English language is not a phonetic language so most words must be memorized entirely. When on the subject of speaking the two main avenues a students must cultivate are the categories of fluency and accuracy. A certain amount of care must be emphasized on these objectives so that the student may begin to produce articulate speech and build confidence in their attempts. When there are two or more people communicating with each other it can be for a variety of reasons. The reasons that pertain to such are in line with having a communicative purpose, desire to say something, desire to listen to something and the interest of what is being said. Accuracy and fluency are equal in importance which promotes the successful use of new vocabulary, controlled grammar and steady speech. Games are also another useful method for getting students to practice their speech and handwriting skills. Games are motivational, they help to maintain an involved attitude and are great ways to procure large amounts of student output. Overall, the teachings and importance of speaking and writing cannot be understated. A student that gives extra effort with either productive skill can compensate for the lack of the lesser developed talent. Nonetheless, the proficiency acquired will help tremendously for future lessons and more complicated word structures.
