In unit 11 we are looking at the two main focuses of receptive skills when learning a language. These two skills are listening and reading for understanding. The motives for listening and reading can be divided up into two catagories; for entertainment and for a purpose. To read or listen for a purpose means to achieve some particular aim or goal and generally helps a person with newfound knowledge. To read or listen for entertainment is simply because the activity is joyful or pleasurable to the person. Reading and listening are not just for the eyes and ears to deduce but rather for the brain to process and recognize. To have increased comprehension of material and to find the significance of things means we gain a higher understanding of the world around us. The levels of expertise in these areas range from; predictive skills, scanning information, skimming, detailed information and deduction of context. Although there are problems with listening and reading these problems are usually found within the context. This means that some of the vocabulary will need to be taught in advanced or brought to the attention of students before diving into topics with such vocabulary. Topics should create interest and tasks shouldn't be too easy or too hard this way the students gain much more than a topic at their designated level. There are equally effective ways of approaching the same lesson. The keys to a successful lesson are as follows; interesting/motivational topics, build interest beforehand, pre-teach vocabulary or structures if necessary, vary the material, use practice of different skills, use realistic materials for comprehension, use activate phases that naturally lead from the texts. Overall this unit holds a lot of good information about the management and proper functions of listening and reading receptive skills. A set of skills one needs to master in order to build confidence, understanding and most importantly implementation of the brain rather than solely the eyes or ears.
