This unit taught the importance and drawbacks of using course books and authentic material in the classroom versus the benefits of using created or substituted materials. While authentic materials (magazine, song) can be very interesting to the students, this would not work with basic learners as the language would be far too advanced. With created materials (word search, role play) the teacher can create something for that specific group but really has to make sure its interesting enough to the students. Finally, I learned that course books have advantages (good guidelines) and disadvantages (written for a general audience) so certain factors have to be taken into consideration before selecting a particular book.
