To teach a language, there are four things that students need to do with new language: be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it's constructed and be able to practice and produce it. As a teacher, we need to teach a language from three parts: vocabulary, grammar and functions. Vocabulary is very important for students, especially the low level students. What we need to do is to teach different vocabulary for different students. It cannot be too easy or too difficult. Even though a learn's receptive vocabulary is much larger than their productive vocabulary, we had better choose the vocabulary that is similar to students' own native language and the English words they have already known. For a typical ESA vocabulary lesson, there should be three stages: engage, study and activate. First stage, we need to use some interesting ways to elicit the new vocabulary and sentence structures, because the first stage always need to motivate their interest for learning English. Second stage, study, there are some different activities we can use, such as gap-fill, word searches and crosswords. That can help students have a better understanding for the vocabulary, especially the gap-fill exercises. Putting the the words in a full sentence can also help students know the structures of the sentences. Last stage is activate, the aim of this part is make students practice what they learned during the class. We can use role-play, simulation or story building for this stage to help students. This is only a example and not all of the lessons are the same. We can also produce our own class based on this three stages.
