Is a level 5 TEFL the same as a CELTA?

In order to allow potential trainees to compare different courses, many countries, organizations and TEFL course providers have developed their own course-level framework. At ITTT our framework currently runs from level 3 to level 7, covering our full selection of TEFL certification courses. On this scale it is generally agreed that a level 4 course is the minimum level expected by employers who are trying to fill vacancies for mainstream entry-level EFL teaching jobs. However, many trainees choose to start their teaching career with a higher level of training. A level 5 TEFL course will give you a genuine headstart on most other first-time teachers and allow you to apply for a wider range of jobs. A level 5 TEFL course on the ITTT scale is the equivalent of a standard CELTA certification course.

How are the different course levels decided?

As mentioned, there are many different course-level frameworks out there, including the one used by ITTT. Our scale has been developed using the same basic criteria as most other frameworks. When deciding on a level, each course is evaluated by what type of certification it is, how many study hours it requires, whether there is any practical training, and whether it is full or part time. By using this system our trainees can easily compare the merits of our different courses and also compare them to those offered by other providers.

Check out our course levels page for full details of our framework.

Level 5 TESOL courses at ITTT

ITTT currently has two TEFL course options in the category of level 5: The 170-hour TEFL course with online specialization and the 220-hour Master Package.

If teaching English online is on your radar, now or at any time in the future, then our 170-hour course is definitely worth a look. If you choose this option you start off with the standard 120-hour online course that provides all the basic skills and knowledge that every first-time teacher needs to learn. Subjects covered include classroom management techniques, different teaching methodologies, how and when to test and evaluate student progress, as well as a wide range of English grammar topics. Once you have completed the initial study, you then start on the 50-hour course in teaching English online. This specialized section of the course takes a close look at all the unique elements that are involved in this popular area of EFL teaching.

Our other level 5 course is the 220-hour Master Package. With this value for money bundle you get three individual courses that cover all the basic teaching skills, plus additional coverage of two of EFL teaching's most popular specialized areas. Once again, this package begins with the 120-hour certification course. After this initial study you can then work through the two 50-hour specialized courses in teaching business English and teaching English to young learners. Either of our level 5 TEFL courses will give you a great start to your new teaching career, wherever you plan to live and work.

What is the CELTA course?

CELTA originally stood for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, although it is now known as the Cambridge English Level 5 Certificate In Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. The CELTA certification is essentially an individual brand of TEFL certification that is awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment which is a part of the University of Cambridge in the U.K. It is an onsite course that takes place over a 4-week period of full-time study at one of over 300 individual schools and training centers that are authorized to teach it. Although it is typically more expensive than many of its competitors, the course is still popular as it can be completed in around 70 different countries worldwide.
