One main take away from this unit was the multiple applications and techniques for teaching a new language—none of which I’ve heard of before. It made me reflect on when I learned a foreign language in high school. I believe the way we learned it was primarily through grammar-translation as we were constantly writing down the English definition of the foreign word. I can see how this is not entirely effective as often direct translations aren’t the ideal way to communicate and often don’t make sense. As the unit mentions, this will only work with a teacher who is fluent in both languages. I currently have nine different native languages in my classroom spoken by twenty-two students. I am not fluent in any of their native languages, so I am forced to teach English through a combination of different techniques. On phrase in this section really stuck with me, which was that “students will learn about the language rather than the language itself.” I often struggle with how much my students need to know. For example, I’d rather have them use plural nouns correctly rather than be able to identify and know the definition of a plural noun, but not be able to use it in a sentence.
